Zebra...

A zebra can travel at a top speed of fifty-five kilometres per hour, slower than a horse. However, it has much greater stamina. During the course of a day the plains zebra can walk around forty kilometres (from its herd, and back again in the evening)
There are three species and many subspecies. Zebra populations vary a great deal, and the relationships between and the taxonomic status of several of the subspecies are unclear. Zebras are members of the Zebra Famiy. All have vividly contrasting black and white vertical stripes (hence the zebra crossing named after it) on the forequarters, often tending towards the horizontal at the rear of the animal. Originally, most zoologists assumed that the stripes acted as a camouflage mechanism, while others believed them to play a role in social interactions, with slight variations of the pattern allowing the animals to distinguish between individuals.

The Wolves defends...

Humans have sought to extinguish the Wolf or centuries. Not because the Wolf is dangerous, but because of man's perception of danger. The facts are simple. Wolves have never sought to remove humans from the earth or committed crimes against humanity. It is not the wolf that is the criminal. It is Man. Consider the loss of t many creatures of the earth simply because of the greed of man. The conflict between man and wolf is not due to the actions of the wolf. It is man who has created this conflict. Yet is it not man who declares that all of the world should live at peace? How can the Wolf People live at peace when it is they who are being murdered by Man..

Thought of the day

UNLESS someone like you cares a whole lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.

- Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

In the end, our society will be defined not only by what we create, but by what we refuse to destroy.

- John Sawhill, The Nature Conservancy

A thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise.

- Aldo Leopold (from the essay, "The Ecological Conscience")

The Supreme Reality of Our Time is...the Vulnerability of our Planet.

- John F. Kennedy (1917 1963), speech, June 28, 1963

Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was loaned to you by your children.

Arctic hare...prey to the Wolves

Wolves are white.Coat color is actually a very superficial characteristic with which to evaluate any species. The arctic wolf is a wolf. It is shaped like any other wolf, acts like any other wolf, travels like any other kind of wolf, breeds with any other kind of wolf, and behaves like any other wolf.Arctic wolves really have never been hunted or seriously pursued in most of the High Arctic, contrary to their counterparts throughout the rest of the northern hemisphere. This makes them mostly unafraid of any human beings they do run into. Rather than flee at the very scent of a human, but merely every hare is their prey.

What's for Dinner?

Gray wolves will hunt large animals such as moose and deer. However, gray wolves are more successful taking the old, weak, or injured animals. In addition, gray wolves will also eat beaver and other smaller animals. The hunting territory of a gray wolf may be 50 square miles or even as large as 1,000 square miles depending on food availability. Many animals, such as eagles, bears, foxes, and vultures feed on the remains from a wolf kill.

Welcome to the world of Bald Eagles

These impressive birds are fish eaters, like ospreys. When they pursue their prey they rarely enter the water as an osprey does, but instead snatch the fish from the surface with their talons. Where ospreys are common, the eagles obtain much of their food by stealing it from the smaller "fish hawk."

Movement of Wolves during winter

Deep snows inhibit the movement and foraging efficiency of moose, and even increase the rate at which wolves prey upon moose. Conversely, shallow snows favor moose and disadvantage wolves. During winters with little snow cover, wolves are less able to kill moose. Reduced rates of predation can lead to reduced reproduction and increased mortality for the wolf population. If the influence of climate on predation is general and applicable to other ecosystems, then global climate change could have important and difficult to anticipate consequences for the balance of predators and their prey world wide.
